Troubled Waters

12 May - 19 May 2022

From May 19 to 28, the ReA! Art Association opens to the public ‘Troubled Waters,’ the group exhibition of the 10 winners of the ReA! Art Prize 2022. The artists were selected from among the 100 exhibited by a jury consisting of Angelo Crespi, Chiara Ventura, Fabio Cavallucci, Hajnalka Somogyi, and Robin Mason during the III edition of ReA! Art Fair, held at Fabbrica del Vapore from October 13 to 16, 2022. During the fair, other prizes awarded included a cash prize sponsored by Artsted and two artist residencies in collaboration with ExtrArtist.

The exhibition, curated by the ReA! curatorial team (Maria Myasnikova, Rita Meschiari, Erica Massaccesi, Paola Shiamtani, Milena Zanetti, and Vittoria Martinotti), takes place in the new multifunctional space Lampo, born from the urban redevelopment of Scalo Farini.

The ten young artists come from diverse origins and backgrounds, with heterogeneous artistic practices that blend together in the exhibition while still remaining distinct. In ‘Troubled Waters,’ the protagonists, who hide behind their artworks, find themselves in troubled waters, without claiming to emerge victorious. Instead, the goal is to take the audience deep with them during the visit, allowing them to observe reality from their perspective through the exhibited works. The troubled and agitated waters should not be feared, because it is only there that one is in contact with the present and can connect with a myriad of open configurations made of places, times, issues, and meanings.

The exhibition also involved students from the CReA! course, an educational project for young curators organized by ReA!, which combines theoretical training with field experience. For this reason, the students contributed to the creation of the exhibition catalog by writing texts about the works and will assist the curatorial team during the setup.

‘Troubled Waters’ opens by invitation on Thursday, May 18, from 6 to 9 PM. The exhibition will then be open to the public until May 28, 2023, every day from 10 AM to 9 PM.
